Earth’s CT Scan

Seismologists from University of California have produced a 3-D scan of the Earth’s interiors that map the volcanic activity, which resulted in the formation of islands like Hawaii, Samoa, and Iceland.

The scientists have mapped the mantle plumes* by analyzing the paths of seismic*seismic*

Apart from the hotspots the analysis also shows that the plumes are fives times wider than geophysicists earlier believed and are likely to be 400 degree Celsius hotter than their surrounding rock.

Scott French from the computational scientist at US Department of Energy’s National Energy Research Scientific Computing Centre said, ‘no one has see before these stark columnar objects that are contagious all the way from the bottom of the mantle to the upper part of the mantle’.
