city of Dvaraka is believed to have existed long ago. It all started with the birth of lord Krishna in prison. Devaki and Vasudeva were Krishna’s parents who had to carry Krishna to Brindavan to protect him from the cruel clutches of his uncle Kamsa. Kamsa was known to be wicked ruler who tortured people of Mathura. During his teenage days Krishna killed his uncle Kamsa and freed Mathura from Kamsa’s governance. The former king of Mathura, Ugrasena was reinstated. The government system in Mathura was of a democratic form.

city of Dvaraka was about to be built by Vishwakarman. Vishwakarman created a ‘City of Gold’ with precious stones, huge mansions and palaces. Lotuses were used to make the doom while crystals and gold were used for the flooring.  Copper, silver and brass were used for building the cowsheds.

Beautiful gardens spilled a magnificent view of flowers, fruits and Parijaat trees. Crystal clear waters from the waterfalls reflected the lotus and water lilies. The city boasted of a well-planned structure ranging from parks to zones and roads to water supply. The only access to Dvaraka was through the flexible bridges that connected Dvaraka with the main land. The inscription of a 3 headed dog on a clay seal was used as a passport to commute. The preparations for the wars were amazing. Mines were planted in the land and the connection of the bridges were withdrawn. The watch towers guarded the city with the help of missiles, inflammable liquids and fire.

It was during the 1980’s when the marine archeologist traced some cues to the existence of the city. Stone walls, several texts and ruins, seals, statue of lord Vishnu, flag poles and harbors that facilitated trade were fetched on the sea beds hinting the existence of the city.

The legends speak of submergence of the city after the transition of lord Krishna from earth to Vaikuntha. The texts of ancient times reveal that the Dvaraka city sustained the test of time for only a few years after the Kurukshetra war. The Yadava clan witnessed frequent quarrels resulting into several deaths. This act turned out to be a violent blow to the peace of Dvaraka city. Depressed by the fate of the city, Balarama sacrificed his body in the forest and so did Krishna a fter sending a chariot to Arjuna with a few instructions.

The city of Dvaraka was evacuated by Arjuna as per Krishna’s guidance.  Legends speak of Tsunamis (volcanic eruptions in the oceans) galloping the city. The entire scenario of submerging of Dvaraka was witnessesd by Arjuna all alone. Dvaraka is believed to be residing in the wombs of the oceans today. Call it a myth or a reality, the city of Dvaraka rules our hearts forever.
