Chlorophyll – the beautician of plants

Come morning and the buzz line is ‘Go Green Eat Healthy’.  Everyone seems to be obsessed about eating green leafy vegetables with deep color tones that reflects their perfection for edibility. Can you ever imagine a world without these green leafy vegetables? I’m sure one cannot. A mere thought of living without these lush green leafy veggies brings about series of apprehensions in our mind regarding our health and wellbeing. Chlorophyll can be attributed for its versatility in maintaining the green leaves and being instrumental to Photosynthesis.

Chlorophyll is the green pigment*pigment*
➤ (n) dry coloring material (especially a powder to be mixed with a liquid to produce paint, etc.)
➤ (n) any substance whose presence in plant or animal tissues produces a characteristic color
➤ (n) a substance used as a coating to protect or decorate a surface (especially a mixture of pigment suspended in a liquid); dries to form a hard coating
➤ (v) acquire pigment; become colored or imbued
➤ (v) color or dye with a pigment
residing in Chloroplasts (oval shaped, star shaped, cups and ribbon shaped blobs found in plant cells; that are capable of converting sunlight into energy). Chlorophyll captures the sunlight and stores it in an ATP (adenosine triphosphate) molecule that in turn combines with carbondioxide and water resulting in the formation of glucose to be consumed by the plants as their food to grow.

If you feel you need to understand the process of photosynthesis better; you can do it with the help of s a simple activity. Place 2 bean sprouts; one in sunny location while the other in a dark location. Ensure that you water both the plants on a regular basis. After a few days, you can observe that the bean plant in the sun is growing while the bean plant in the dark appears to be dry and sick. This activity depicts that sunlight is essential for the plants to prepare their own food and sunlight can be tapped only by the leaves with the help of chlorophyll.

Recently, internet has seen a surge in the number of articles boasting about the benefits of consuming chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is said to be an excellent dietary supplement, an awesome antioxidant, a healing agent and a swelling reliever. This aspect needs clarification and has been subjected to a series of debates. Whatever is the outcome, we still cannot ignore the importance of chlorophyll in the photosynthesis.
